The following year marked a significant transition when he joined the Fremont Fire Department as part of its first-ever class of firefighters/paramedics.


Throughout his career, Gerald was known for his leadership and skill. He quickly rose to the role of Fire Captain/Paramedic. Then, he took on the responsibility of Operations Staff Captain, managing critical programs that enhanced the fire service's and the community's safety and efficiency. Despite retiring from active duty, his passion for firefighting continued as he joined the Foresthill Fire Protection District, where he played a pivotal role in mentoring younger firefighters and shaping the district's development.

Expanding Roles in Emergency Services

Gerald's impact extended beyond the fire department. He also worked as an EMT with Pomeroy Ambulance Services before advancing to a paramedic role with American Medical Response. His expertise in emergency medical care was also utilized at the Concord Pavilion, where he provided medical services during major events for over ten years.


His strategic communication and management capabilities were showcased through his tenure as a communications specialist with the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) California Task Force 4. This role often saw him at the forefront of national disaster responses. Gerald later served as a Division/Group Supervisor on a Type 3 Incident Management Team, coordinating efforts during hurricanes and wildfires across the United States.


The profound challenges of the Oakland Firestorm in 1989 and the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1991 were critical in shaping Gerald's approach to emergency management and response, reinforcing his commitment to his profession.

Commitment to Education and Health

Gerald's dedication to public service is also evident in his role as an educator. He taught Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) courses at several hospitals in the Bay Area, influencing countless other medical professionals with his experience and knowledge.


Gerald's retirement from his formal roles did not mean a retreat from active life. Instead, it opened new avenues for pursuing his passions in the great outdoors and maintaining his health. An avid adventurer, he enjoys hiking, mountain biking, dirt bike racing, snow skiing, and cross-country skiing.

Gerald is passionate about staying active and a proponent of the keto diet, which he follows to maintain his muscle mass and energy levels. His approach to fitness is rooted in simplicity and sustainability, focusing on setting realistic goals and tackling them one day at a time.

He participates in numerous racing events, including the District 36 cross-country, the Virginia City Grand Prix, and the Tecate Extreme Enduro.
